How do I order a cake?

Please refer to the information regarding our process, pricing, delivery and policies

How far in advance should I order a cake?

We will do our best to accommodate your order, but specialty cakes are labour-intensive. Because each cake requires a great deal of attention and several hours to be completed, we can only accept a limited number of cake orders each week. Also, some weeks are busier than others, so the sooner you call, the better the chances of your date being available.

Dessert cakes require at least 72 hours’ notice and specialty cakes usually require two to three weeks’ notice.

I would like to reserve my date, but I am not sure about the other cake details yet. What should I do?

If you are sure about having a cake made by Berliosca Cake Boutique but not sure about details such size, flavour, theme, etc, you can reserve the date of your event with a $500 non-refundable deposit.

How much cake do I need to order?

That depends on what else you are serving at your event and what size slices of cake you intend on serving.

If you are serving your cake as dessert, then you will need to ensure that you have at least one slice available for each person on your guest list. If you are having a dessert table, you may reduce the amount of cake to 60%-80% of your guest list and orient the catering staff to cut and serve smaller slices (often referred to in the industry as coffee-size servings), but please note that our cakes are famous for their taste and many clients mention that their guests actually asked for seconds!

How much will my cake cost?

We do not have a set price list for our cakes and it’s difficult to provide a proper quote without knowing the specifics regarding your event and cake needs. But just to give you a rough idea our cake prices start at $6 per serving and most of our clients choose a cake ranging between $8-$15 per serving. Our minimum order is $200.

Why should I reveal my budget?

Every cake idea can be developed in many ways. Different materials, complexity of techniques used, cake toppers and other custom-made decorations will affect the price of your cake in different ways, and so your budget helps us determine what to design for you.

If you don’t have a budget or are unsure about how much specialty cakes cost, you can learn more about our pricing structure here. Considering the starting prices you can determine your maximum budget, and we will explore cake design options within your budget.

Do you make faux or fake cakes? Is it cheaper than real cake?

We can certainly use dummy tiers along with real cake tiers if your design requires it. For example you have your heart set on a four-tier cake, but you only need cake to serve 60 guests. Or you are having a outdoors reception in the peak of Summer and would like to have the cake displayed for many hours.

Assuming the cake price will be cheaper when using dummy tiers is one of the biggest misconceptions about specialty cakes. The amount of decorating time put into each cake is the main element impacting its price, so while we do not have to bake, the price of a fake tier made of laser cut styrofoam can be quite expensive, so it’s fair to estimate faux cakes prices are similar to real cake prices if the same number of decorating hours is required to create both cakes.

You offer miniature cakes, why are they more expensive than one serving of cake since they also only feed one person?

Miniature cakes (see photo 11 of our wedding cakes gallery) are way more time consuming to make and decorate, so that is reflected on their price.

Some of the benefits of having miniature cakes served at your event (besides of them being cute) is that guests can take them home as a special treat or a wedding favour, also they are not subject of cake cutting fees usually charged by event venues.

Do I need to choose a design from your portfolio? Can I send a picture of a cake I like for you to recreate?

If you think one of our previous cakes is perfect for you, then sure, but we prefer not to recreate the same cakes over and over. Our portfolio should be used as inspiration and to show you what you are capable of creating, as well as to show the quality and attention to details given to our cakes.

If I choose to add sugar flowers on my cake, how much the flowers will cost me? Instead, can I have fresh flowers on my cake?

All of the flowers adorning our cakes are individually handmade from sugar paste. There is no set price list on the flowers as they are not sold separately. As part of the design they will be priced within the total of your cake.

We do not supply fresh flowers. If you choose to have fresh flowers on your cake they need to be coordinated with your florist and made available for placement on the cake when it is delivered. Just make sure the flowers of your choice can be placed on the cake, as some flowers while beautiful are also poisonous.

Do you offer consultations and tastings?

Yes, you can find more information about consultations under design process.

Is it possible to have more than one flavour in the same cake?

Yes, it is possible, but having more than one cake flavour but you should notice that once your guests realize there is more than one flavour, they may want to try them all. If you did not plan enough cake for these seconds, you may end up serving fewer people.

What is fondant? What if I don’t like fondant?

Rolled fondant is a sugar paste that we use to cover cakes. It can be tinted in any colour and not only provides a smooth finish, making the cake a perfect canvas for creativity, but also seals in the cake’s moisture and flavour.

Some of our cakes can be covered with buttercream or ganache, but fondant is needed for most decorated cakes.

The fondant layer is very thin, about 1/8”. So if you or your guests decide no to eat it,  simply peel the fondant off your slice.

Do you make sheet cakes?

Yes, we offer undecorated sheet cakes, at a lower per-serving price, to supplement orders over 150 servings. If you are looking for a combination of faux cake plus sheet cake for less then 150 guests the sheet cake servings’ price will be the same as of a real cake.

How do I keep the top tier of my cake for my first anniversary? Do you recommend it?

Please read our advice about freezing your cake at Vancity Bride

Can I stop by just to get a last minute cake?

We are a by-appointment-only cake boutique, and all of our cakes are made to order, so we don’t have pre-made cakes available for a last minute pick-up.

My mother wants to bake the cake, would you decorate it?

We only decorate cakes that we make, however if you’d like to serve a cake baked by a relative or a friend, we can decorate a dummy cake for display or make a cake topper for you.

Are you hiring?

We are fully staffed at the moment; however we may take on extra help for the summer months. Email us your resume and a sample of your work and we’ll keep it on file.

Can I visit your shop and watch you work?

We are a small and very busy cake boutique, so unfortunately we cannot accommodate visits.

I want to learn from you, do you teach classes?

Yes, we do! For more information please send an email to classes@berliosca.com with what you would like to learn (it can be a particular cake design or a day full of techniques) and your contact information.
